Relationship with Brain Injury:
Tameka’s life was profoundly impacted when her husband suffered an anoxic brain injury following a cardiac arrest. The journey of caregiving and adapting to his significant physical and cognitive changes brought her face-to-face with the challenges faced by brain injury survivors and their families. Thanks to unwavering faith and resilience, she has supported her husband’s recovery, finding gratitude in the progress he continues to make.
“In May of 2022, my husband suffered an anoxic brain injury due to cardiac arrest that deprived him of oxygen. He was hospitalized for 2 months and spent 30 days in inpatient rehab. Initially he needed help with all daily activities and could not be left alone. My husband and I had been together 10 years when his injury occurred. After his brain injury, he wasn’t the same person and was never able to resume his career as a Federal Agent. We are grateful his long term memories remained. With intensive daily therapies he has regained the ability to do some daily tasks but still has a long journey ahead. Our faith in God has sustained us through the years of disability.”
Passion for the Mission of Hope Survives:
As a founding board member, her personal experiences and professional expertise fuel a deep commitment to the mission of Hope Survives. Tameka is driven by a desire to ensure survivors and their families feel supported and never alone. Her experience learning to become a caregiver for her husband inspired her to want to help others going through a similar experience, which led to her facilitating “Hope For Couples,” our brain injury support community for couples navigating brain injury together.
“After Thomas suffered his head injury he was not the same person and our marriage obviously changed. I very quickly realized that it is our faith in God that has sustained our marriage. I wanted to create a safe space for couples to share and find strength knowing they are not alone in this journey.”
More than the many accomplishments that her life has brought, she is truly a woman after God’s own heart. She loves the Lord, her family, her church, and is faithful to all the many gifts and talents that God’s blessed her with. By leveraging her skills, her empathetic heart, and her firsthand understanding of the brain injury journey, she strives to create a compassionate community where healing and hope thrive.
