Understanding
Brain Injury

Brain injury affects millions of individuals and their families every year, altering lives in profound ways. At Hope Survives, we’re dedicated to supporting survivors and caregivers through education, resources, and community. Understanding brain injury is the first step in fostering compassion and creating a world where no one navigates this journey alone.

What is a Brain Injury?

A Brain Injury, also known as by the umbrella term Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), refers to damage to the brain that occurs after birth and disrupts its normal function. ABIs are broadly categorized into two types:

  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): A type of ABI caused by trauma to the brain from an external force, such as a sudden impact, jolt, or penetrating injury that disrupts its normal function. TBIs can range from mild (e.g., concussion) to severe.

  • Non-Traumatic Brain Injury (commonly referred to as ABI): A type of ABI caused by internal factors, such as illness or lack of oxygen.

Common Causes of TBI:

Falls (most common!), Motor Vehicle Accidents, Sports Injuries, Assaults, Blast Explosions (common in veterans and military personnel), and more…

Common Causes of ABI:

Stroke, Aneurysm, Infectious Diseases (i.e. encephalitis, meningitis), Brain Tumors, Brain Surgery, Electric Shock, Oxygen Deprivation, Cardiac Arrest, Near-Drowning, Alcohol/Drug Abuse, Overdose, and more…

Living with any type of brain injury can bring many changes including:

  • Physical Symptoms: Fatigue, headaches, dizziness, changes in mobility, and more.

  • Cognitive Challenges: Memory loss, difficulty concentrating, slower processing, and more.

  • Emotional Struggles: Anxiety, depression, mood swings, a sense of isolation, and more.

  • Sensory Difficulties: Altered vision, impaired hearing, loss in sense of touch, temperature sensitivity, and more.
