Can you share about the brain injury event itself?

In June 2018, I was in a collision with a dump truck, and two months later, I had a stroke. I believe that Jesus and God saved me that day, which is why I am here today as a stroke survivor.

How did you feel during the first days, weeks, or months after the injury?

I felt weak and helpless for a long time. To this day, I still rely on one hand to do everything.

What kind of rehabilitation therapies or treatment have been most helpful through the process of recovery?

Individual therapy at Brooklyn College has been incredibly helpful, as well as their Aphasia Group. Additionally, STAR in Lubbock, TX, has been a great resource.

If there have been setbacks or repeated injuries, describe that journey:

Simple daily tasks like getting dressed, showering, and using the bathroom have been difficult.

If there have been setbacks or repeated injuries, describe that journey.

I have had several mini-strokes since my major one, and I’ve also fallen multiple times. Since I’m 6’2”, getting up after a fall can be quite difficult, but I always manage.

How has your life changed since the brain injury?

I used to teach ESL classes for money, but now, I tutor ESL students one-on-one for free. That is one of the biggest changes in my life.

What role has support from family, friends, or community played in your journey?

My family has been supportive, but I’ve changed, and they have too.

Have there been any moments of breakthrough or unexpected positives along the way?

Joining Cristabelle’s support group on Saturdays, which is now held on Sundays, has been life-changing. I am grateful to serve as a Prayer Ambassador through this group.

What has surprised you about this journey with brain injury?

I used to love pop and soul music, but my interests have completely changed.

What do you know now that you wish you knew at the beginning of this journey?

Recovery takes years, not months. I’m almost 61, and I’m still learning what healing looks like.

What does "hope" mean to you?

Hope is found in Jesus and God. I learn this anew every day.

If you could share one encouraging message with another survivor or their family, what would it be?

Don't give up. Keep improving and trying new things. Some people may drift away, but don’t let that stop you. Keep moving forward.
